Algerian car market recovers 2011-05-10
Algeria’s car imports rose by some 40% during the first quarter of this year to reach 88,027 cars versus 62,771 cars during the same period last year. The data by the Algerian Directorate of Customs indicated that the North Africa country Algeria had spent in the first quarter just over US$ 1 billion worth of cars compared to US$ 855 million for the same period last year.
Algeria’s total imports of cars amounted to 285,337 in 2010 against 277,881 cars in 2009.
The auto market in Algeria has witnessed a decline of 24% in 2009 after the Algerian government’s decision to prevent banks from providing loans for consumption, especially in the car market. In addition it announced new taxes on the authorized dealers to adjust the car market, which has been very active and posted a significant rise in the value of imports.
